Solvay EF1812 Polycarbosilane Polymer, Pyrolized with T300 Carbon Fabric
Categories: Ceramic; Carbide

Material Notes: EF1812 is a polycarbosilane polymer prepreg system specially formulated for the manufacture of ceramic matrix carbon fiber reinforced components operating at high temperature. After laminating and curing in a conventional manner, the component requires a six-stage Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis (PIP) cycle. This process converts the polycarbosilane into a silicon carbide-silicon oxycarbide (SiC-SiOC) matrix. Typical applications include lightweight heat shields and ducts which are subject to elevations in temperatures of up to 800°C (1472°F) for short periods of time. The life expectancy of components made from EF1812 depends on the time, temperature and nature of the hot environment, and must be determined by in-situ tested.

Features & Benefits:

  • 5 day tack life at 21°C (70°F) with both release films in position
  • 12 months storage at -18°C (0°F)
  • Autoclave processing
  • EF1812 is supplied on T300 woven carbon fiber as standard
  • Typical cure 6 hrs at 190°C (356°F)
  • Suitable for high temperature applications
  • Requires 6 stage Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis (PIP) cycle to fully densify
  • EF1812 is suitable for light-load bearing applications
Mechanical property data for EF1812-heat treated T300 plain weave carbon fabric 200g/cm2; Cure: 6 hrs at 190° (374°F), 6.2 bar (90 psi), followed by 6 PIP cycles. Tested dry at room temperature.
