Octenylsuccinic anhydride, OSA, is prepared from linear 1-octene. It contains few, if any, branched alkyl chains and retains the unsaturation of the parent olefin. The position of the unsaturation is thought to be predominantly as shown below based on theoretical grounds, but the isomer distribution in the product has not been determined.
