Material Notes: Colorless liquid with benzene odor, Heavier than air and highly inflammable, and Not soluble to water, Readily soluble in alcohol and ether

Structure & Characteristics: C6H5CH3. Synthesized by extraction (using solvent) followed by purification of pyrolysis gasoline evolved from NCC process. Although it is a methyl-substituted benzene, the benzene ring is susceptible to electrophilic substitution due to the electron-donating methyl branch. Its 2,4,6-trinitro derivative (TNT; tri-nitro-toluene) is a well known explosive agent.
