Versalis Extir® LN 5000 Expandable Polystyrene
Categories: Polymer; Thermoplastic; Polystyrene (PS); Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

Material Notes: Extir LN 5000 belongs to the product family, the Leonardo Series, with these features: high expandability, high moulding productivity, wide processing area, optimal fusion and mechanical strength, excellent item finishing. Extir LN 5000 improves the main features of the traditional A 5000, combined with lower steam consumption. Extir LN 5000 can be used for the production of blocks over a wide density range.

Applications: Extir LN 5000 is a versatile product with good expandability used for block-cut items with good aesthetic and thermal insulation properties. Typical applications are: • blocks for thermal =insulation (internal wall, floor, roof) • void formers, trough formers and culvert formers cut from blocks • shop window dressing • cut or excavated packaging • boards and profiles for building, to be coupled with plasterboards, bitumen layers or metal plate.

It is recommended to keep the product in a dry well ventilated store between 15-20°C. For product packaged in octabins the guaranteed shelf-life is one month; product in steel drums has a six months guaranteed shelf-life. During the processing of Expandable Polystyrene any sparkle or flame must be avoided and smoking should be forbidden. An adequate electrical grounding of machinery and of pneumatic transport lines is recommended. This grade complies by composition with the requirements set by the main regulations for plastics intended for food contact (including the EEC directive 90/128).

Processing: Extir LN 5000 can be easily prefoamed from 13 to 25 kg/m³ with only one expansion and down to 9 kg/m³ after a second one. The ageing time before moulding is typical of standard industrial practice; from 6 to 72 hours are recommended depending on the density and ambient conditions. When two expansions are performed, it is advisable to mature beads at least 3-6 hours between the two expansions. During block molding, Extir LN 5000 can accept without difficulty up to 30 % of scrap material. Molding is easy, regular and the resulting items satisfy the application needs over a wide range of steaming conditions. Fusion is excellent even if very low steam pressures are used, so allowing energy savings.
