AQUA-CHEM® 896 colorants are designed for use in a wide variety of water-based industrial coatings. The colorants are based upon a water-reducible acrylic resin. They can be used in water-reducible and emulsion coatings in both air-dry and baking systems. The colorants are low VOC and glycol-free. They have little or no effect on gloss, dry time, water resistance, hardness, corrosion, foaming, or other coating properties. AQUA-CHEM® 896 colorants are recommended for applications such as water-based general industrial, wood finishing, metal deco, architectural coatings, maintenance coatings for plastics, and rubber latex products. 896 Pigments: The pigments in these colorants were selected to provide a wide range of hues and good durability, lightfastness, and chemical resistance. However, the lightfastness, chemical and weathering properties of pigments depend a great deal on the coating in which they are used. The manufacturer recommends that, for positive verification of lightfastness and durability, the colorants be tested under accelerated and actual weathering conditions, to determine suitability for the desired use. 896 Tint Strength Control: 896 Colorants are controlled to a tinting strength tolerance of ±2% by volume. They are tested in a white base at a level of two fluid ounces per gallon. This close control allows for accurate reproduction of color. Rheological properties of the colorants are also controlled to allow for use in volumetric tinting machines. Volumetric formulas using 896 colorants are available for the ANSI Safety Colors and the Federal Standard 595b colors. 896 Intermix System Bases: The white tinting strength or TiO2 level for the white and deep bases used in the intermix system can be determined and adjusted as follows. Add the following levels of 896-0401 Red to the bases: White Base 124 oz. fill level, add 4 oz. of colorant Deep Base 120 oz. fill level, add 4 oz. of colorant These mixtures should be drawn down at 3 mil wet film thickness on sealed drawdown cards and compared to the base strength chips in the Industrial System fan deck. |
