Polimix S5002 Polyester Sheet Moulding Compound
Categories: Polymer; Thermoset; Polyester, TS; Thermoset Polyester Glass SMC

Material Notes: SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) is a reinforced composite material that consists of a mixture of: thermosetting resins; 25mm glass fiber; Fillers; additional components

Application of this grade: This compound is mainly compression molded. The ability to use reinforcing fibers up to 50 mm allows for high mechanical properties.

Production process: It is produced by mixing polyester resin and the main additives, obtaining a paste with a honey-like consistency, which is pumped into a coating machine equipped with a cutter that, synchronized with the dosing of the paste, adds the reinforcing fiber in a predetermined and constant quantity. A support film ensures that the two layers of dough can be joined to the fiber coming from the cutter, thus creating a sandwich structure with two layers of dough on the outside and the fiber in the middle. The next operation, which is carried out in-line, is the compression of the resulting mattress by means of cylinders and metal nets in order to facilitate the best impregnation between the various components. The SMC is then welded in boxes or wrapped in rolls, the packages are then placed in the curing chamber. After about 24 hours, through the reaction with the thickener the paste becomes solid and allows easy removal of the backing film. SMC formulations are customized according to the customer’s needs, the type of customer’s needs, the type of presses and the complexity of the moulds.

Application of this grade: Electrical
