Thermal Ceramics Saffil® Fibralloy Preform
Categories: Ceramic; Oxide; Aluminum Oxide

Material Notes: Fibralloy Preforms are precisely shaped ceramic fiber based products manufactured to the desired specifications from discontinuous alumina-silicate (Kaowool®), high alumina (Saffil) fibers, ceramic powders, or blends of both. These fiber preforms are used to selectively reinforce lightweight alloys, usually aluminum.

Fibralloy Preforms are molded using a unique, closely controlled process which uniformly combine selected engineered fibers, particles, and binders. With the addition of hybrid preforms to the Fibralloy family, metal matrix composites can be tailored to meet the most demanding requirements at the most economical costs.

MMCs are manufactured through infiltration of the porous Fibralloy Preform with molten metal. Squeeze casting of liquid aluminum alloys is the best known of these processes although other alloys and casting technologies have been and continue to be developed. Selective reinforcement of the casting is also possible using one or more preforms in specific locations to enhance particular properties. This combination of familiar, affordable aluminum casting technology with Fibralloy Preforms creates MMCs with material characteristics tailored for difficult design challenges. Wear resistance, weight reduction, low thermal expansion, stiffness, and thermal fatigue resistances are key properties that may be improved with MMCs.

Features:

  • Full range of engineered ceramic fiber compositions
  • Hybrid compositions of ceramic fibers and particles for greater design flexibility
