Carbon and graphite cloths, consisting entirely of flexible filaments, are produced by pyrolysis of rayon cloth at high temperatures to yield products with a high degree of purity. The cloth flexibility results from the very small filament diameter. These are fair conductors of electricity. At room temperature the volume resistivity of graphite cloth is about 40 times that of "Nichrome" wire. Graphite cloth resistance decreases with temperature, reaching half of the room temperature value at 1315°C. 97% carbon assay, 8.9 µm filament diameter Solvay has acquired the Thornel product line as a part of the Cytec purchase. |
