Wacker Geniosil® XL 33 Silane
Categories: Fluid; Other Engineering Material; Additive/Filler for Polymer

Material Notes: Empirical formula: C8H16O5Si

CAS No.: 54586-78-6

Properties: Thanks to the increased rate of hydrolysis and condensation due to the alpha-effect, using GENIOSIL® XL 33 to modify the surface of inorganic fillers or pigments or in the production of moisture cured pipes and cables leads to substantially faster production processes and, in some cases, to greatly simplified treatment procedures (e.g. by making catalysts unnecessary). Used in plastics, fillers treated in this way exhibit improved dispersibility. Such mineral-filled plastics also show improved mechanical properties, while casting resins exhibit a pronounced reduction in melt viscosity. Use of GENIOSIL® XL 33 as a co-monomer in polymers results in binders that display extremely rapid curing and strong adhesion to the substrate thanks to the alpha-effect, and are additionally characterized by a pronounced improvement in wet scrub resistance and increased abrasion and scratch resistance. As a component of free-radical curable adhesives and sealants, GENIOSIL® XL 33 permits the adjustment of mechanical properties and results in improved substrate adhesion.

Special features: GENIOSIL® XL 33 is an alkoxysilane with a methacrylic organofunctional group. It´s a clear, colorless, light and heat sensitive liquid with a characteristically sweet odor. The silane hydrolyzes in the presence of moisture (methanol is released) to form silanols, which can then react with themselves to produce siloxanes. The close proximity of the alkoxysilyl group to the ester function results in greatly accelerated hydrolysis and condensation reactions (alpha-effect).As a bifunctional, organically unsaturated molecule, GENIOSIL® XL 33 can be incorporated into organic polymers, e.g. via radical grafting, and can simultaneously bond to inorganic substrates via the alkoxysilyl group. GENIOSIL® XL 33 can thus function as a molecular bridge between inorganic and organic substrates.

Application: GENIOSIL® XL 33 is mainly used as a surface modifier for glass fibers, fillers and pigments used in thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics and elastomers. As a polymer component of moisture-curing coatings or adhesive and sealant formulations, for example, GENIOSIL® XL 33 functions as a crosslinker and/or adhesion promoter. Other important uses are in the production of pipes and cables made of silanecrosslinked polyethylene (PE-Xb), in heat and/or radiation-curable adhesives and sealants and as an adhesion promoter in paints and industrial coatings.
