Wacker Geniosil® GF 58 US Silane
Categories: Other Engineering Material; Additive/Filler for Polymer

Material Notes: Empirical formula: (CH3OCH2CH2O)3SiCH=CH2

CAS No.: 1067-53-4

Properties: The use of GENIOSIL® GF 58 US in mineral-filled polymers (e.g. polymers filled with kaolin, ATH or magnesium hydroxide) leads to a marked improvement in the mechanical and electrical properties, and to increased moisture resistance in particular. In addition, it renders the particles extremely water-repellent, which results in improved dispersibility, reduced melt viscosity and thus improved processability. Use of GENIOSIL® GF 58 US as a co-monomer in polymers results in binders which, thanks to crosslinking and strong adhesion to the substrate, exhibit much improved wet scrub resistance and abrasion resistance. Organic surface coatings will adhere more strongly to inorganic substrates, such as glass or metals, that have been treated with GENIOSIL® GF 58 US. As a result, these coatings demonstrate markedly greater scratch resistance and resistance to chemicals.

Special features: GENIOSIL® GF 58 US is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristically aromatic odor. GENIOSIL® GF 58 US is a vinylalkoxysilane. It hydrolyzes in the presence of moisture (2-methoxyethanol is released) to form silanols, which can then react with themselves to produce siloxanes. As a bifunctional, organically unsaturated molecule, GENIOSIL® GF 58 US is able to function as a molecular bridge between inorganic and organic substrates.

Application: GENIOSIL® GF 58 US is used mainly in mineral-filled EPM and EPDM cables. In addition, GENIOSIL® GF 58 US is used in the production of silane-modified polymers that serve as binders for paints and adhesives, and as an adhesion promoter in primers and coatings.
