Large explosion at aluminum plant in southeast Missouri
The explosion and fire around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday sent a large plume of smoke above the Noranda Aluminum plant near the town of Marston in New Madrid County, about 140 miles south of St. Louis. The YGS Group provides digital and printed reprint services for Daily Herald.

L.B. Foster sees sales, profit drop in second quarter
L.B. Foster Co. reported second-quarter net income and sales were down year-over-year, most notably in its rail segment, which is coping with "fewer projects in the transit market and pockets of weakness in freight rail," company president and CEO Robert P. Bauer said in an earnings release this morning.

The closing date now will be the 15th business day following the satisfaction or waiver of all conditions precedent to the transaction. This supplants the original target date of on or about July 31. The May 26 share acquisition agreement provides for Zijin to acquire, through a subsidiary company, a 49.5% interest in Kamoa Holding Limited for an aggregate consideration of US$412 million, subject to satisfaction or waiver of certain conditions precedent to the transaction.

Pa. DEP fines Bucks landfill owner
Pennsylvania has fined Waste Management Inc. $500,000 for failing to contain odors or quickly treat waste water at its aging lower Bucks County landfills. Specifically, the state's Department of Environmental Protection said the Tullytown dump committed odor nuisance violations that spawned numerous complaints from residents across the nearby Delaware River in Florence, N.J. The DEP also said the company took too long to treat water - rain or otherwise - that flows through the Tullytown site as well as two other dumps it owns in neighboring Falls Township.

Houston department considering trash and recycling surcharge
The director of Houston's Solid Waste Management Department has reportedly floated the notion of a monthly trash and recycling service charge to help fund additional recycling collection efforts. An online report from KPRC Channel 2 in Houston quotes City of Houston Solid Waste Director Harry Hayes as saying Houston is "the only big Texas city that doesn't have a fee like this" to fund services.
